University of Bremen, Germany: PhD research position

PhD research position
with the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Group
at the University of Bremen, Germany

Job Description:
The work in this position will comprise research on 3D geometric algorithms, virtual reality, and 3D visualization techniques. In many of the application areas we are currently working on (e.g., space mission simulation or operating rooms), efficient collision detection, penetration computation, and collision handling algorithms are important enabling technologies. In addition, visualization and interaction techniques are necessary for providing good understanding of the progress and the results of the simulation. Often, both the visualization and the interaction take place in 3D virtual environments.
The work will comprise the design and development of those techniques and algorithms, in collaboration with a small team working already on various interactive and VR simulator projects.
The tasks will also comprise a small amount of help with teaching in the computer science program (e.g., as teaching assistant).

The primary responsibilities of the fellow will be to help build the virtual reality (VR) component of the lab, including managing hardware and software, designing and running studies, analyzing data, assisting with grant proposals, and conducting training modules/sessions. The fellow will have a Ph.D. in hand (or should defend and join the lab by August 2016). The ideal candidate would have extensive experience (e.g. 4-5 years of graduate studies) developing research-quality *immersive* virtual reality applications, preferably in Unity3D, involving commercial head-mounted displays and wide-area tracking systems. Experience incorporating embodied conversational agents (e.g., 3D models, animation, and artificial intelligence) into social applications is desirable, as is the ability to network together multiple virtual reality systems into collaborative virtual environments. An understanding of experimental methods and statistical skills are a plus.

Salary is competitive. The fellowship is for one year, with the opportunity to renew for a second year. For more details about the position, please contact Sri Kalyanaraman at: sri@jou.ufl.edu.
