Open PHD position on Visual Abstraction at Inria, France

Call for applications for PhD project:
Spatially Integrated Abstraction of Genetic Molecules
=====================================================

We look for candidates for a fully-funded PhD position that takes place within a scientific initiative of studying, understanding, and formalizing visual abstractions. By considering abstraction as a general transformation from data into meaningful visual stimuli, the project will address aspects of geometric abstraction, illumination abstraction, abstraction in terms of levels of detail, or other relevant aspects of visualization. In particular, this PhD work should focus on visual abstractions that are meaningful in context of studying DNA macromolecular structural composition and its organization into higher-level structures up to chromosomes.

Open PhD position on Creating Light Fields at University of Bath

Creating light field content from existing images and videos

The goal of this project is to create appealing visual content for upcoming light field displays from existing imagery, particularly from image and video collections such as historical photos or consumer videos.

Light field displays for the first time offer the viewer more than two views of an object from different perspectives, and they can thus reproduce the appearance of real-world objects which previously unachieved fidelity. This has been demonstrated by first research prototype displays, and commercial light field displays will become available within the next few years. However, cameras for capturing light field images or videos are not yet readily available, which is why this project aims to create light field content from existing imagery, which is readily available. To achieve this goal, the project will research and develop image- and video-based rendering approaches for synthesising visually plausible novel views, as well as new data-driven inpainting techniques for filling occlusion holes in a visually consistent manner.

Requirements
Candidates should normally have a good first degree (equivalent to a First Class or 2:1 Honours), or a Master’s degree in computer science, visual computing or a related discipline. A strong mathematical background and strong previous programming experience, preferably in C++ and/or Python, is required. Candidates must have a strong interest in visual computing, and previous experience in computer vision, computer graphics and image processing is highly desirable.

Funding notes
UK and EU students applying for this project may be considered for a University Research Studentship which will cover Home/EU tuition fees, a training support fee of £1000 per annum and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £14,296 (2016/17 rate) for 3.5 years.

Note: ONLY UK and EU applicants are eligible for the studentship; unfortunately, applicants who are classed as Overseas for fee paying purposes are NOT eligible for funding.

We welcome all-year round applications from self-funded candidates and candidates who can source their own funding.

Additional information
Anticipated start date: 2 October 2017.

Informal enquires are welcomed and should be directed to Dr Christian Richardt (
c.richardt@bath.ac.uk). Formal applications should be submitted via the University of Bath’s website: http://www.bath.ac.uk/science/graduate-school/research-programmes/how-to-apply/.

PhD student position in urban data viz at Ecole Centrale de Nantes

Visualization of multi layered spatiotemporal 3D urban datasets

Keywords: urban data, geovisualisation, user study

Background, Context:

The understanding of complex spatio-‐temporal urban data is a critical challenge in urban planning as the stakeholders have to take into account numerous constraints related to various domains embedding sustainable, social and economical concerns.

To tackle this problem, geovisualization uses methods based on human perception and cognition to show the underlying meaning of spatio-‐temporal datasets. This PhD thesis proposes to explore visualization methods in various 3D environments (Desktop, VR, AR, SAR) to find the best solution for a given user task (exploration, decision) at a given
urban scale (building, street, district, etc.).

This PhD in information visualization takes place into an pluridisciplinary environment (computer science, geoinformation, humanities): the CRENAU team of the AAU lab (http://crenau.archi.fr/),which is a founding member of the IRSTV research institute (www.irstv.fr), and the IVC team of the IRCCyN lab (http://www.irccyn.ec-‐ nantes.fr/fr/equipes/ivc)

Research subject, work plan:

The work is about displaying spatio-‐temporal urban data in an effective way. Based on the user's profile, behavior and task, the most appropriate visualization type and data quality will be estimated. More precisely, this PhD thesis proposes to consider each data as a layer that will be processed according to the data type and the required levels of detail as well as the display context. The data model will be based on standards
currently used in GIS and/or BIM communities. User tests will be conducted to evaluate
the quality of proposed solutions. The research challenges include both visualization solution proposal and the construction of an evaluation framework for information visualization.

Three-year Postdoctoral Position in Multisensory Virtual Reality

The Human Interface Technology Lab New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, NZ has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher.

This three-year position will focus on the design, implementation, evaluation, and deployment of multisensory feedback techniques in immersive Virtual Reality (VR) systems. The work will involve research into methods for generating and delivering multisensory cues in concert to produce user experiences that mimic real-world situations in high fidelity.

In addition, novel user interface techniques focusing on expressive, non-fatiguing interaction that can be used to support long-duration VR use will be designed and evaluated.

The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in a VR-related field, such as computer science, and have a history of successful work in conducting user studies in VR, as evidenced by publications in appropriate venues.

Significant mentoring of the successful candidate will be provided by senior academic staff, giving the candidate a solid foundation for assuming a more-permanent position at the conclusion of the appointment. The candidate will be given significant freedom to help manage and guide the more-junior members of the research team, and as such, build skills in project and team management.

Results of the work will be submitted for publication in leading journal and conference venues, and there is significant budget for travel to present the work.

The candidate will also have the opportunity to assist in delivering courses within our Master of Human Interface Technology programme, covering tropics around usability, prototyping, and evaluation.

The HIT Lab NZ is one of the leading research labs focused on human-centred design of technology to support people in all facets of their lives. We put the person first, and then apply an appropriate mix of technology for that person in the context of the tasks they are doing. The Lab is very international in flavour, and interdisciplinary in thought and approach.

Needless to say, New Zealand provides an unbelievable setting to perform this work, and the HIT Lab NZ values a balanced approached to work and life. Christchurch is the prime spot to launch excursions around New Zealand, as it has an international airport, and is in the middle of South Island. This provides easy access to beaches, pristine forests with extensive, well-maintained walking and mountain-biking tracks, excellent skiing in winter, and easy connections to other locations such as Australia. Christchurch is also very family friendly.
