Postdoctoral position at Inria

Design of Novel Hand-‐‑based Interactions in Virtual Reality
Job offer description
Keywords: Virtual Reality, 3D interaction techniques, haptic rendering
The context of the postdoctoral position concerns the design of 3D interaction techniques with virtual environments, especially for dexterous haptic rendering (tactile and haptic feedback applied to the hand). The postdoctoral position aims at proposing novel 3D interaction techniques for dexterous hand haptic rendering with virtual objects. The objective is to design novel and efficient 3D interaction techniques to ease the grasping and the manipulation of virtual objects through haptic gloves. The new techniques will particularly take into account the specific issues of portable haptic interfaces. The candidate will propose novel tools for assisting the user and handling the challenges around haptic rendering dedicated to the hand. All the proposed interaction techniques will be evaluated through experimental protocols with manipulation tasks and specific use cases. The final objective is to improve the user skills for manual haptic interaction in virtual worlds. The main applications targeted in this project are related to industrial virtual prototyping.
Research environment
The work will be conducted in the Hybrid Inria research team in Rennes, France:
https://team.inria.fr/hybrid/
The scientific fields of Hybrid are Virtual Reality and 3D interaction with virtual environments. Hybrid research focuses on multiple user inputs, and intends to exploit both motor activity (motion-‐‑tracking) and mental activity (brain-‐‑computer interfaces). The team aims to create novel “body-‐‑based” and “mind-‐‑based” controls of virtual environments, and reach in both cases immersive and efficient 3D user interfaces. The “hybrid approach” mixes mental and motor activities in virtual reality. Hybrid applications are in the field of industry (virtual prototyping), medicine (surgical simulation, rehabilitation), design (architectural mock-‐‑ ups), digital art, or videogames.
Skills and profile
The candidate must have a PhD in virtual reality, 3D interaction, haptic rendering or computer graphics, with strong computational skills and experience with C++ programming and an interest in the research topics of the team Hybrid. The net month salary is around 2120 euros (health insurance included). There is a financial support from Inria to catering and transportation expenses. The duration of the position is 12 months. The starting date is as soon as possible.
