Game Production Faculty Position at UT Dallas

The School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at the University of Texas Dallas invites applications for open rank tenure stream faculty members in game production. Applicants’ research and teaching interests may include but are not limited to digital game design and development, serious games, educational games, virtual reality, augmented reality, scripting and programming, technology development, virtual environment design, level design, and experimental game design.

Created in 2015, the School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication merged two long-running programs at UTD: the program in Arts and Technology and the program in Emerging Media and Communication. As a School, ATEC serves more than 1,500 students, including 100 master’s students (MA and MFA) and 40 doctoral students. ATEC faculty include artists, designers, computer scientists, social scientists, cultural theorists, and reflective practitioners who seek to collaborate on intentional future-making through the creation of new cultural forms, the design of new technological experiences, the production of new knowledge, and the transformation of the culture industries. Students are taught to be conversant across the discourses of art / science / design / engineering / humanities. They are expected to gain foundational knowledge in multiple disciplinary areas of expertise. They learn how to engage with different modes of knowledge production, different methods of analysis, and different research and creative practices.

With the leadership of inaugural Dean Anne Balsamo, successful applicants will welcome the opportunities and challenges of creating a multidisciplinary school that values collegial open-mindedness and supports collaboration across differences. Faculty candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, active scholarship, and service within the academic unit, university, and profession.

This search aims to help create a diverse faculty body and seeks applicants who contribute to equal opportunity at UT Dallas. We particularly welcome candidates who place race and ethnicity, diasporic concerns, underrepresented populations, or social inequalities at the center of their research and teaching interests, as well as faculty who might bring to their research diverse perspectives that stem in part from their non-traditional educational backgrounds or from their personal experiences as members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.

New PhD Student Position in Machine Learning for Fluid Simulation

Within the scope of the Doctoral Programme (“Doktoratskolleg”) Computational Interdisciplinary Modelling (DK-CIM) of the University of Innsbruck, the Interactive Graphics and Simulation Group and the Unit of Environmental Engineering invite applications for the position of a PhD student, focusing on the acceleration of solvers for Navier-Stokes equations via machine learning techniques.

We are seeking a motivated and talented PhD student with interest and skill in physically-based simulation, fluid simulation, data-driven approaches, and/or machine learning techniques. The main focus will be on the development of data-driven machine learning methods for accelerating computations in physically-based simulations. The main application domain will be the simulation of fluids in environmental engineering scenarios such as flows in hydraulic networks and structures as well as surface flows. Of special interest will be (particle based) semi-Lagrangian solutions, fluid-solid boundaries, mesh adaptivity, as well as learning correction methods. A further target will be the tracking and characterizing of the simulation error, also via machine learning.

The work will be jointly supervised by Prof. Wolfgang Rauch, head of the Unit of Environmental Engineering and Prof. Matthias Harders, head of the Interactive Graphics and Simulation Group.

Candidates should have earned a Master or Diploma degree in either Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or other related fields. Good knowledge in physically-based simulation is expected. In addition, some experience with machine learning  methods is of advantage.
Further, knowledge of domain-specific applied fluid simulation is also a plus. Experience and knowledge in C/C++ programming is expected, as well as a good level in English, both written and spoken.

The position is open immediately until filled. It is offered on the level of a nonpermanent university research student for three years at a 75% rate (i.e. 30 hours per week). Successful candidates will become employees of the University of Innsbruck with full social security coverage under Austrian national law. The gross salary for the position will be about 2.048,30 EUR/month (14x).

PhD level studies will be carried out according to DK-CIM regulations. Note that a final doctoral degree would be possible either in Computer Science or in Engineering. The Doctoral Programme is committed to increasing the percentage of female employees in science and therefore explicitly invites women to apply.

Candidates should send electronically in PDF format an application with complete CV, grades and transcripts, relevant certificates, and URLs to relevant prior publications via email to the Research Area Scientific Computing (scientificcomputing@uibk.ac.at).

Internships at IBM in New York

The project will cover the integration of 2 IBM Research projects. The first (CADS) aims to find the best Machine Learning models given a certain dataset. The second project (Runway), stores and manages Machine Learning models and all its related data and links. The goal of the project is to keep track of CADS training and its results in the Runway system, such that the various CADS runs, models, and related data can be discovered, re-used, and served. On top of common database discovery operations that may use tags and keywords for discovery, this ML model management system also includes the extraction and representation of the various model performance metrics and model characterization. This facilitates model management from a ML point of view, for both the data scientist, as well as the scoring service/app developer.  Specific work items of this project include the design of the representation of ML model and CADS specifics, the implementation of such a respresention, the implementation of a CADS/Runway integration on either a VM or in IBM Bluemix, possible visualization aspects. The project can be finished with a demo and/or a paper submission that describes the system. Interested students may send a resume to : Horst Samulowitz (samulowitz@us.ibm.com).
