PhD Position "Optimising 3D Light Transport" at Delft University of Technology

Job description

Controlling light in an environment is a difficult task, since many aspects such as materials, light sources, and arrangement have to be considered. The main objective of our work is to produce novel, interactive solutions for high-performance light transport computations and accompanying visual analysis. We will investigate practical aspects, such as efficient ray-tracing solutions, and search for a theoretical understanding of the underlying methodologies to derive controllable tradeoffs between accuracy and performance. To this extent, we will address the problem from various angles. First, we opt for new hierarchical approaches and alternative representations for visibility and transport queries. We recently presented compact and compressed scene representations and intend to adapt their use to light transport. Here, we will also focus on alternative representations of material properties, which are a key ingredient for an efficient and accurate multi-scale light transport. Secondly, we intend to explore efficient use of multi-core environments and progressive rendering solutions. The candidate will have access to a dedicated computer cluster environment. Third, we want to build upon recent signal reconstruction techniques to minimise the computational cost of the overall process. Finally, we will develop specialised techniques to support light transport analysis and facilitate scene setups.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
• You are a talented and enthusiastic researcher.
• You have experience with or a strong background in computer graphics, high-performance computing, and image processing.
• Preferably you have a Master degree in Computer Science, (Applied) Mathematics, (Applied) Physics or Electrical Engineering.
• You have excellent programming skills and experience (e.g. C++, OpenGL).
• You have good communication skills and the attitude to participate successfully in the work of a multidisciplinary research team.
• You are creative, ambitious, hardworking and persistent.
• You have a good command of the English language (knowledge of Dutch is not required).

Professor of Visual Computing at University of Bath

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath seeks a Professor of Visual Computing. The successful candidate will be an internationally leading academic who will contribute to leading and enhancing the Department. The Department is structured in four groups:
Visual Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Intelligent Systems and Mathematical Foundations.

Currently including seven academic staff and associated researchers, the Visual Computing group has broad interests bound together by the contemporary movement of vision and graphics convergence. Research includes body and face tracking, motion capture, acquisition of natural phenomena and buildings, 3D geometry, 2D shape, and object recognition. The group regularly publishes in leading conferences and journals. It currently holds over £12M in research funding, including the new EPSRC Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA). In addition, the group hosts the £20M Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE), in which research students are co-supervised by world-leading industrial researchers.
Partners include The Imaginarium, The Foundry, the BBC, Double Negative, and many others. The group enjoys collaborations with academics including Cardiff, Loughborough, UCL, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and KAUST. The group also contributes to the international community through its work on steering committees, editing journals and other activities.

This opportunity arises following the retirement of Professor Phil Willis, Director of the CDE. The successful candidate may assume the Directorship of the CDE, subject to negotiation with the University and EPSRC. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct excellent research, with the ability and desire to collaborate effectively and productively with colleagues across the University and beyond.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage with our existing research activities. The post holder will also be expected to take the lead in developing his or her own research funding portfolio from appropriate national and international sources, and to carry out and supervise research in line with the Department’s strategy and targets.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and should be able to demonstrate a continuing commitment to maintaining the University’s high standards in teaching and learning, with the ability to educate and inspire some of the brightest students in the country.

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the leadership and management of the Department and group.

2 PhD Positions in Visualization at the University of Bergen, Norway

The visualization research group (http://www.ii.UiB.no/vis/) at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway (UiB), is seeking motivated and capable new PhD students who wish to pursue cutting-edge visualization research in a stimulating and dynamic environment.

Currently there are two vacancies in the context of the MetaVis project funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project aims to study the space of visualizations itself and how it can be efficiently and effectively navigated. The goal is to develop interactive visual methods to enable users in choosing appropriate visualization techniques for particular types of data and tasks. The topic for the PhD can be chosen within this broad range to suit the strengths and interests of the PhD candidate.

Postdoctoral positions in Virtual and Augmented Reality @ University of Arkansas

The Emerging Analytics Center (EAC) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) has two (2) 3-year funded Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in the areas of virtual and augmented reality and interactive technologies.
We are seeking highly creative and motivated individuals that would like to start their research career in VR/AR at the EAC. Candidates need to have a strong background in interactive computer graphics or related fields (Gaming, HCI, virtual reality); good programming skills and experience in C++, Python, OpenGL; and, familiarity with visualization tools and game engines (ranging from tools such as Paraview, VMD, ArcGIS, to Unity and Unreal Engine). Candidates must have a strong level of spoken and written English and must be able to work both independently and in a team in a multidisciplinary environment. The positions have a great deal of flexibility for candidates to pursue research in areas of their interest. Candidates will also have the opportunity to define technology acquisitions at EAC in order to support research activities. There could be a possibility of transferring
to a tenure-track faculty position at the completion of the postdoctoral work.
Candidates will work under the direction of Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira and Dr. Dirk Reiners in a variety of applied research projects in virtual reality, augmented reality, visual analytics, modeling and simulation, and training. One of the primary expectations for candidates is their ability to generate publishable papers from the research projects under their responsibility.

About the Emerging Analytics Center
The EAC at UALR is a new research center focused on applied research in visualization for a wide range of disciplines. The center has a strong multi-disciplinary base of faculty, researchers and students addressing a diversity of challenges through the application of virtual reality, mixed reality and visualization. One of the unique aspects of EAC is that it acts as a “knowledge-broker” between faculty expertise and industry and government R&D needs. EAC has a core group of members, but it also draws faculty from the entire campus as needed for each project opportunity. As a consequence, another unique aspect of EAC is its ability to perform highly multi-disciplinary research towards the design, development, and deployment of applied research products to be utilized outside the research community and integrated into industry workflows. EAC is a focus of expertise as well as a focus of technology transfer. Research results are disseminated through traditional venues such as publications, patents, and spin-offs as well as through Open Source products and an expertly-trained workforce targeting specific industry segments.

PhD Position at University of South Australia

Visualisation, Visual Analytics and Story Telling Visualisation

Established with a grant of $25 million in July 2014, the Data to Decisions CRC (D2D CRC) is part of the Cooperative Research Centre's Program where, with funding from the Australian Government, researchers and industry are brought together to be a leading provider of Big Data capability resulting in a safer and more secure nation and a sustainable Big Data workforce for Australia.

The D2D CRC will develop new PhD trained data scientists and socio-legal policy specialists to meet the Big Data challenge for Australian Industry and Government and be industry job ready at their completion.

Students in the Analytics and Decision Support Program will undertake leading-edge research projects that enable analysts and users in the Australian defence and national security community to better:
• Narrate visualisations for novel display technologies
• Narrate techniques for storytelling visualisations
• Visualise and manipulate large, diverse data sets
• Use semi-automatic tools for the creation of a Data Videos

Scholarships
• Full scholarships at the value of $26,288 per annum living allowance + tuition waver (tax free stipend)*
