Multiple Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Positions, School of Computing
The School of Computing at Clemson University is seeking applicants
for multiple Post-Doctoral Research Fellow positions with an emphasis on
applications to medicine and health. In particular we are looking for
applicants with skills and experience in the following focus areas:
Visualization, Machine Learning/Data Mining/Information Retrieval/Text
Analysis, Computational Science and Social Analytics, Manufacturing,
Virtual Reality and Visual Simulation.
These positions are part of Clemson’s strategic hiring initiative
in Computational Science and Visualization. The project duration is one
year and renewal of post-doctoral fellows funding will be based on the
progress made toward the success of the initiative. Renewal of the
funding may be in the form of continuation of the post-doctoral fellows,
hiring of research faculty, or hiring of tenured/tenure-track faculty.
The School of Computing comprises three academic units representing a
broad cross-section of computing and its applications: (1) the Division
of Computer Science, (2) the Division of Visual Computing, and (3) the
Division of Human-Centered Computing. The school includes 31
tenured/tenure-track faculty, 6 lecturers, 419 undergraduates, and 215
graduate students. Competitive funding for FY12 was over $5 million.
Clemson University is the land-grant institution of South Carolina,
enrolling approximately 15,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate
students. A faculty of 1,400 and staff of 3,000 support 84 undergraduate
degree offerings, 73 master’s degree programs, and 40 Ph.D. programs.
Research and economic development activities are enhanced by
public-private partnerships at three innovation campuses, and six
research and education centers located throughout South Carolina.
Clemson University is ranked 21
st among national public universities by
U.S. News & World Report.
Clemson University is described by students and faculty as an
inclusive, student-centered community characterized by high academic
standards, a culture of collaboration, school spirit, and a competitive
drive to excel.

Position Descriptions and Application Information
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN VISUAL SIMULATION
This position will report to Professor
Larry Hodges in the
Virtual Environments Group
and will work with a multidisciplinary group of computer scientists and
domain experts on a number of visual simulation projects with an
emphasis on healthcare and education. Current work includes development
of multiple training and simulation systems for health care
professionals, development and testing of a game for use in post-stroke
neurorehabilitation and joint work with the Center for Aviation and
Automotive Technology Education using Virtual E-Schools. In addition to
the technical areas associated with the research project, the
Post-Doctoral Fellow can expect to gain experience in grant and paper
writing, the supervision of student researchers, and multidisciplinary
collaboration.
A successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science
or a closely related field and experience in one or more of virtual
reality, real-time simulation, virtual humans, experimental design and
evaluation, and 3-D interface design. Exceptional programming skills in
C/C++ in addition to excellent written and spoken English skills are
essential. System development experience in the Unity game development
ecosystem is a plus.
Interested applicants should send a CV describing their
background, skill set, and a brief research statement with career goals,
along with the names and contact information of three references and
any other relevant information to Dr. Larry F. Hodges (lfh@clemson.edu). The position is currently available. Application material must be received by
November 15, 2013 to receive full consideration, though the search will remain open until the position is filled.
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN VISUALIZATION
This position will report to Professor
Joshua A. Levine in the
SAVAGE Graphics Lab and will work jointly with researchers in
Visual Computing and
Clemson CITI
on projects focusing on visualization in the presence of uncertain
and/or heterogeneous data. Candidates with expertise in volume
visualization and perception will also be considered. We expect an
interdisciplinary role for such a candidate, who will work jointly on
the visualization of data coming from, for example, medical, weather,
and GIS sources. In addition to the technical areas associated with the
research project, the Post-Doctoral Fellow can expect to gain
experience in grant and paper writing, the supervision of student
researchers, lecturing at both the graduate and undergraduate level, and
multidisciplinary collaboration.
Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a
closely related field. Expertise in statistics, computer graphics,
geometric modeling, animation, and medical imaging will also support the
tasks in this work. Strong programming skills, especially experience
with 3D graphics and visualization toolkits, are required. Spoken
English and the ability to communicate effectively in groups are
essential.
Interested applicants should send a CV describing their
background, skill set, and a brief research statement with career goals,
along with the names and contact information of three references and
any other relevant information to Dr. Joshua A. Levine (levinej@clemson.edu). The position is currently available. Application material must be received by
November 15, 2013 to receive full consideration, though the search will remain open until the position is filled.
